Since 2002, bacteria levels in Tehuacana Creek have exceeded the state water quality standards for recreational use. These standards are set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to protect the health of people engaging in recreational activities such as swimming and wading. Recent water quality monitoring efforts have confirmed elevated bacteria in lower portions of the creek.
TCEQ is providing funds and working with the Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI) to restore water quality in Tehuacana Creek. TWRI will conduct supplemental water quality monitoring to better understand water quality issues in the creek. Additionally, TWRI will conduct a full characterization of the watershed to provide an accurate inventory and assessment of needs for both natural resources and stakeholders that is critical for successful future watershed planning efforts. Public outreach and educational events will raise awareness of the importance of healthy watersheds. This collaboration will guide future endeavors to achieve water quality goals identified by stakeholders.
